Review of BrAVO Winter 2006 Meeting

Held at November 17-19th Bristol Marriott City Centre

We were very happy to welcome you once again to the annual BrAVO winter weekend meeting. As the days get chillier and shorter, what a better way to spend a weekend than to meet old friends and colleagues, make new friends and be immersed in ophthalmology related science at the same time!

We were very excited to offer you a program this year which combines a wide range of ophthalmic topics with talks addressing systemic conditions associated with ocular diseases that challenge our medical abilities in practice everyday!

Our overseas guest ophthalmologist will be Elizabeth Giuliano. Elizabeth is a member of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists and she currently is the head of the Ophthalmology Unit at Missouri University. She is an accomplished speaker who has promised to share her knowledge of practical companion animal and equine ophthalmology with us. Elizabeth's special research interest is the treatment of equine periocular tumours with photodynamic therapy and Elizabeth will present her groundbreaking work on the management of equine periocular SCC with us.

Our second guest speaker, Marie Kerl, holds boards in both the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Medicine. Marie also works as Clinical Associate Professor at Missouri University and her clinical and teaching duties include both internal medicine and critical care. Marie will help to bring us up to date with systemic conditions commonly associated with ocular disease – including diabetes, lymphoma and HAC and she will hopefully help us to look more carefully at the ocular support unit! As a special opportunity, Marie will also share her experiences as an active member of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Team during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina with us in our regular 'Letter from America' slot.

We were very fortunate to have the meeting organised by Rachel Polton, Veterinary Event Management (VEM). Rachel will be co-ordinating the registration process and will be happy to help you with any queries both before the meeting and during some of the week-end itself. She has spent many months creating the ideal week-end of ophthalmology for us all and we are very appreciative of her expertise.
