Spring BrAVO Meeting 2008
Wednesday April 2nd
Hall 8b, ICC, Birmingham
BrAVO Spring Meeting A Happy New Year from the BrAVO Committee to all members! Hopefully you all got what you wanted from Christmas, like good food and drink. And maybe some of you had rest too. But there is no rest for the wicked! BrAVO spring meeting is just around the corner……
Our pre-BSAVA Congress 2006 satellite meeting is on Wednesday 2nd April in Hall 8b. We are honoured to have as our main speaker, Mary Belle Glaze DVM MS DACVO.
Dr. Glaze graduated from Texas A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine, after which, she undertook a residency and Master's degree in veterinary ophthalmology at Michigan State University. She joined the faculty of Louisiana State University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital until July 2001, when she retired as Professor Emeritus of Veterinary Ophthalmology. She joined the Gulf Coast Animal Eye Clinic, Houston TX, in August 2001, where she is one of three board-certified ophthalmologists on the staff.
Dr. Glaze is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. She was the first woman elected president of the American Society of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ASVO). She has spoken to veterinary groups throughout the world, has authored a variety of journal articles and book chapters, and is the co-author (withDr. Kerry Ketring) of veterinary atlases on feline ocular disease and canine inherited ocular disorders. Her university research focused on the use of novel lytic peptides for the treatment of herpetic ocular disease in animals.
In these post-BSE, near present FMD and present Blue Tongue days, many of us have difficulty in accumulating experience in cattle and sheep ophthalmology. To help remedy this, Terry Grimes BVetMed PhD DVR DVOphthal DECVO MRCVS, has kindly agreed to give us two talks on farm animal ophthalmology. Dr. Grimes works at University College Dublin where he teaches undergraduate students and runs an ophthalmology service. His research interests include developmental abnormalities of the eye, face and oral cavity, the application of surgical techniques in the relief of veterinary ocular problems and some ocular conditions of wildlife and exotic species.
Our retiring secretary Heidi Featherstone BVetMed DVOphthal DipECVO MRCVS has also kindly agreed to talk on How to Survive the Certificate Exam Practical. This is definitely the scariest part of the exam, but it needn't be, when it is what we do everyday. Learning how to approach the exam so that all consciousness doesn't evaporate when you step in the room is a valuable lesson!
Lunch is included in the registration fee, and for this year, wine is included. No sleeping in the afternoon sessions though! It will be held at the ICC to avoid traipsing over to Pizza Hut etc., waiting to be seated, waiting for your food, bolting it down and rushing back with indigestion.
We would also like to encourage you to submit an abstract for presentation at the Spring BrAVO meeting. It's much easier than the certificate exam practical, and entitles you to
free registration for the satellite day. It looks good on your CV, especially if you are considering a residency in ophthalmology. You see fantastic cases – please come and tell us about them! The deadline is March 1st, for more information please refer to the Spring 2008 Abstract Information included below.
Our sponsors will be there in force once again. We are extremely lucky to have them so that we can browse the latest commercial advances. It is really worthwhile chatting to these companies; they can provide you with all the equipment and information you desire. If you want to discuss a new device/instrument/treatment they have enormous experience both in the veterinary and the human medicine fields.
Best wishes
BrAVO committee
